The initial vision for the establishment of an international body bringing together providers of investor education grew out of the activities of the Working Group on Investor Education established by the International Council of Securities Associations (ICSA)—the global body for trade associations and SROs whose members are active in the national and/or international capital market—in early 2003. The members of this Working Group, who would ultimately become the founding members of IFIE, drafted ICSA's Principles and Best Practices for Investor Education, the first global set of standards for providers of investor education, in early 2004. IFIE was subsequently established as an independent organization in early 2005 with founding members from Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, the UK and the U.S.
